Can you tell what it is yet?

There has been a bit of small scale construction going on down at the mca over the last few months. You may have noticed a small group of the male gardeners, standing around and scratching heads with arms folded and serious expressions.
 With the help of the barbeque lit, a cement mixer and an experienced brick layer, construction got under way and a great idea to make our own pizza oven gradually materialised. Natural stone found alongside the wall was used to face the base of the oven.

The finer work required the skills of our female gardeners to combine sand, perlite and clay to produce a mix to make bricks. Many methods were used but the best was the Polish stomping technique, perfected by Magda in bare feet!

Impressive brick moulds

The first hand made brick!

After a long weekend of brick making and 2 layers of bricks the oven is taking shape. It has been left for a few weeks to dry. Although there are some cracks we have been advised that this is perfectly normal for clay drying out, thats the story we're sticking to anyway! Work will continue this weekend to complete the third and final layer of brick made from 3 parts sand to 1 part clay. It really is an impressive sight and even more so when you consider all the effort and man/woman/child hours of labour, cups of tea and head scratching. Hope to see you all there to complete our very own mca, hand made pizza oven.

MCA Bubbly

After many years of talking about it, today I have at last done it -

put elder flowers and lemon in a bucket with water and sugar;

give it a stir;

cover and wait.

In case you haven't guessed yet, I am attempting to make elderflower champagne. It should be ready in a couple of weeks, why not have a look at the recipe below and have a go!
